المقدمة
خلال السبع سنوات الاخيرة ارتفع بشكل ضخم عدد الاطفال الذين يولدون بعيوب خلقية في مدينة الفلوجة العراقية. هذا ما خلصت إليه دراسة أجرتها كلية الصحة العامة في جامعة متشيغان في الولايات المتحدة. اعتمدت الدراسة على متابعة أكثر من خمسين أسرة لمدة ست سنوات حتى عام 2010، ووجد الباحثون أن اكثر من نصف مواليد هذه الأسر يعانون من عيوب خلقية. وكانت هذه النسبة واحد لعشرة مواليد قبل الحرب. وقبل عام 2000 كانت هذه النسبة أقل من واحد في الخمسين. التفاصيل في تقرقر مراسلة بي بي سي كارين زارينداست.

Fallujah played an unwilling host to one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war. The US-led battles for Fallujah wrecked the city's homes and businesses and hundreds of Iraqi civilians were killed. Eight years on and a new study suggests that the legacy of war has left the city with poisoned babies with toxic levels of lead and mercury contamination in their bloodstream, as well as spiralling numbers of birth defects ranging from congenital heart defects to brain dysfunctions and malformed limbs.
US marines first bombarded Fallujah in April 2004 after four employees from the American security company Blackwater were gruesomely murdered. Seven months later, the marines stormed the city for a second time, using some of the heaviest US air strikes deployed in Iraq. American forces later admitted that they had used white phosphorus shells, although they never admitted to using depleted uranium, which has been linked to higher rates of cancer and birth defects.

Since the publication of the report, the US Defense Department has said it not aware of any official reports indicating an increase in birth defects in Al Basrah or Fallujah that may be related to exposure to the metals contained in munitions used by the US or coalition partners. World Health Organisation will be publishing an in-depth report in November.
